When I told Beatrice about the sunflowers Bass had given me one year to the day since our first date, she pursed her lips. Summer, sitting in the vacant block next to the café. She was living in her cottage. I remember her hands were icy with the paint she had used for her bathroom.

‘They’re my favourite,’ I say.

‘I know,’ she snaps.

We sit in silence for a moment. ‘Well,’ I say. ‘You know all about this stuff.’

‘What stuff?’

Dumb stuff. ‘Different stuff.’

Beatrice glared at me and I shrugged. ‘I don’t mean it badly.’

‘Huh.’

‘C’mon. What do sunflowers mean? I know you looked them up in a book.’

Beatrice sniffed and tugged at a tuft of grass. She told me that sunflowers meant faith and healing. Meant luck and longevity. Pleasure. Light. Life.

‘Do you think Bass knows?’ I asked.

She snorted. ‘We look at flowers and try and work out what they mean. Men look at flowers and wonder if they’ll score them a blow job.’
